Location – Majuli Island, Assam

Ayang’s work is centered around the flood-affected, marginalized communities of Majuli Island surrounded by the Brahmaputra in Assam. Majuli - the world's largest inhabited river island is projected to disappear by 2050 due to extreme erosion, hinting at a displacement of over 200,000 people. Ayang is on an urgent mission to ensure that we reach each child of the over 600 primary schools on the island in the next 5 years to give them access to education that will build the agency of the next generation of Majuli to deal with any adversity.
Ayang is collaborating and co-planning with the district administration on a district-wide education transformation program. We are looking for a core team member in our education program team at this accelerated growth phase of the organization. You will be working closely with stakeholders on the field, government officials as well as other team members, to develop the structures and processes for Ayang to work on scale without compromising on depth of impact.
You will start from an outstanding foundation. At the heart of Ayang Trust is The Hummingbird School which was started by the local community along with the earlier team members of Ayang. Ayang’s work in education is informed by action research practices from The Hummingbird School where we work to build contextual education solutions that are low cost, high quality, replicable and sustainable. The immense transformation children at Hummingbird School has shown and our subsequent work with over 30 government schools has enabled support across communities and the government towards our approach.
You will be part of a close-knit team that is mission-driven and have great colleagues who contribute skills across education, engineering, social work, and program design. We execute, fail, succeed and learn as a team while ensuring each individual has space and scope to challenge themselves. The team complements each member’s role based on their strengths and areas of learning. The role promises an exponential learning curve across domains. As a core team member, you will contribute to shaping Ayang Trust as a civil society organization.
What you will be doing could include, but is not limited to:
• End to end program designing - from problem mapping to defining activities aligned to outcomes.
• Research - from reviewing contemporary literature and studying existing interventions across the globe to consulting with other organizations to deepen understanding of existing best practices as well as identify areas that can be contextualized.
• Content Architecture - from creating learning modules for Ayang’s Education Programs in Lower Primary Schools to ensuring synergy between various Education Programs of Ayang.
• Conduct school and community visits to see programs in action and identify factors that might influence program outcomes, and account for in curriculum and content designing process.
• Monitoring and Evaluation - Developing and implementing a comprehensive evaluation of the programs. Evaluate data from the monitoring process and identify compliance with Term and Yearly goals and identify appropriate course corrections to be made.
• Documentation and Reporting - from creating Handbooks and Program Documents of Ayang’s Education Programs to developing project concept notes and proposals to submit to potential supporters.
We would love to hear from you if the following sounds more or less like you:
• Resonates with the mission of Ayang to build agency in every child of Majuli through education
• Are passionate about working in, with and for marginalized rural communities
• Have the willingness and sensitivity to work in multi-cultural and multi-ethnic communities, and live in a low resource environment
• Have taken a risk and failed
• Made something happen against all odds – picked up marathon running despite being asthmatic? built a community school ground up with no single rupee in the pocket? convinced parents to not make sister go through archaic menstrual traditions?
• Went against irrational norms society dictated for you and operates from a personal moral code
• Think no work is beneath you
• Lead by example and find opportunities to improve processes
• Are outcomes-oriented and see how to build partnerships to succeed
• Seeks to constantly improve own ability through continuous learning, reflection, and feedback
• Can stretch beyond call of duty and own the mission
• Are able to work and problem solve under uncertainties and are self-driven
• Have a point of view but are low ego
• Operate from a space of love and compassion
We would be especially excited if you have worked in education programs for underserved and marginalized communities in rural or difficult geographies. If you have prior experience in the public- school education system, building strategic partnerships, teaching or working towards the cause of education, please don’t forget to mention it.
Ayang embraces diversity and equal opportunity in a serious way. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. If there is anything we can do to create a more comfortable interview experience for you, please let us know.
This is a rare opportunity to live and work in a rural community while working on defining high impact and at scale programs.
